India and Russia are working together to avoid US military sanctions

Por Olivia Rosario Rodríguez

Indian government sources announced that the Asian country and its neighbor, Russia, are currently working together in the creation of strategies that allow them to circumvent the financial sanctions imposed by the United States government. The measure, said the spokesman, have an as main objective to affect military companies in both countries.

The Indian newspaper 'The Times of India' quoted two informed Indian Government sources about this theme. One of them reported that there are ways to avoid the new financial sanctions provided by the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, know by Caatsa. The source also indicated that the consultations to elaborate a roadmap to make possible the fact is carried out with the Russian Government at different levels.

The US decision to impose sanctions on several companies in the Russian defense sector, with which India has cooperated for a long time, cause a huge discontent in New Delhi. According to the Indian newspaper, several banks in the country had to suspend financial transactions with Russia, even though the Pentagon chief, James Mattis, urged Congress to ease the effects of the sanctions imposed by Moscow on several countries - including India-.

It happens that, in accordance with the government sources, on one side, US wants India to remain its closest strategic partner in the Asia-Pacific region, a strategy that aims to confront China; but, on the other hand, the North American nation has endangered several projects that India and Russia have, such as helicopters, frigates, and submarine. That's the reason why, according to the spokesman, India slowly considers the United States as an unreliable weapon supplier.

Russia and India are great partners in the field of military cooperation, in fact, more than 70 percent of the weapons and equipment of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force in India, were produced in Russia and the old Soviet Union. However, the law to Counter United States Adversaries through sanctions, allows the US government to impose penalties to third countries who have agreements with companies in the Russian defense sector.

It is still unknown what will be the pact between both countries to circumvent the measures of the most powerful nation in the world.
